Mara Sugar
FC has officially advanced to the Round of 16 in the FKF Cup after the Football
Kenya Federation (FKF) Appeals Committee upheld an earlier decision to
disqualify AFC Leopards from the tournament.
The
decision stems from an incident during a Round of 32 match at Kisumu's Mambo
Leo Stadium, which was abandoned in the 89th minute after unrest broke out
following the reversal of a penalty decision initially awarded to AFC Leopards.
The score was tied 0-0 at the time.
The FKF’s
Leagues and Competitions Committee (LCC) had initially ruled that the
abandonment was caused by a pitch invasion involving AFC Leopards supporters.
Citing Article 6.4(iv) of the Mozzart Bet Cup Regulations and Article 3.5.6 of
the FKF Rules and Regulations, the committee awarded the match to Mara Sugar
and issued a formal warning to AFC Leopards.
According
to FKF rules, clubs are held accountable for the behavior of their supporters,
and any match abandoned due to fan misconduct results in forfeiture.
AFC
Leopards appealed the ruling, arguing that the committee had erred in its
findings. However, after weeks of review, the FKF Appeals Committee sided with
the LCC and confirmed Mara Sugar’s progression.
As a
result, Mara Sugar will face Compel FC in the FKF Cup Round of 16 on May 21 in
Kisumu. The winner of that tie will go on to play Kenya Police FC in the
quarterfinals.
