History was made today at the IYF Center in Kilgoris as the Free Weekend Academy held its inaugural graduation ceremony, celebrating the achievements of over 40 students who have successfully completed various vocational and leadership training programs.
The institution, which officially launched its second season of weekend programs on April 12, 2025, under the theme "Empowering Youth Talent for Tomorrow’s Job Market," is already making a mark in the region. The graduation marked a critical milestone, signaling the academy's growing impact on youth development and employment readiness.
Led by their representative Angel Kurao, the graduating class expressed both their joy and their hopes for the future. Kurao, speaking on behalf of the students, thanked the institution for the opportunity and practical skills gained, but also made an earnest appeal to local leaders to invest in the program and help fund the graduates’ next steps.
“We are grateful for what we have learned here. But we need tools, startup support, and mentorship to implement our skills. We ask our leaders to walk with us and believe in our future,” she stated.
The Free Weekend Academy offers diverse programs in computer courses, leadership, technical skills, dance, and English language. It is a collaborative effort supported by the International Youth Fellowship (IYF), Ministry of Youth Affairs, Talanta Hela, and other development partners.
Principal Fred Barasa praised the graduates for their resilience and enthusiasm, calling the day a “milestone” for both the students and the institution.
“These young people are now equipped to go out and make a real difference in their communities. This is only the beginning,” he said.
Amos Marai, a faculty member, echoed the sentiment, expressing his satisfaction with the progress and revealing ambitious plans ahead.
“We are targeting to enroll over 500 youth in upcoming sessions. The hunger for knowledge and skills is real in our communities, and we must rise to meet it,” he said.
With continued support and expansion, the Free Weekend Academy aims to become a beacon of hope for many underserved youth in Narok County and beyond, helping to close the gap between talent and opportunity.
