Ongata Rongai Boxing Club's Fight for a Greener Future

In the vibrant county of Kajiado, Kenya, an unexpected alliance of environmental advocates has emerged: the Ongata Rongai Boxing Club. Led by the unwavering coach, Michael Otieno Ragot, they are stepping out of the boxing ring and onto the streets to advocate for a critical cause—the protection of their environment.

Since 2020, the Ongata Rongai Boxing Club (ORBC) has been dedicated to improving their town through a combination of boxing and environmental action. They have made tree planting and regular waste removal a regular part of their activities. Given that 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels, their production contributes to climate change. Plastics also release greenhouse gases when they degrade or are burned. Approximately 3.8% of global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to plastics. The club is committed to addressing this issue and making a difference.

Coach Ragot says, "As ORBC, we deeply care about our environment. That's why we have taken charge to spearhead the fight against pollution and climate change."

Boxing's environmental emphasis aligns with a comprehensive program launched in 2021 that incorporates boxing with community involvement and environmental initiatives. This approach reflects the success of similar programs implemented by Kenyan sports organizations, demonstrating the power of their platform to drive positive societal impact.

Studies in Kenya on similar community-based environmental projects have been successful. Programs like the County Climate Change Fund (CCCF) demonstrate how local approaches can improve farming, protect nature and lessen the effects of climate change. Community involvement in project planning and implementation increases ownership, accountability and resilience. These efforts have led to the formation of local environmental groups and ignited an environmental movement in some villages, serving as a model for ORBC's work in Kajiado County.

Despite their efforts, the club faces obstacles. The CCRI study revealed that deforestation, overgrazing and climate change pose challenges for local communities. Additionally, the club struggles with a lack of recognition and appreciation for their work, which can lead to feelings of discouragement.

Despite facing challenges in Ongata Rongai, ORBC persists in its mission of promoting boxing excellence and protecting the environment. This approach mirrors strategies employed by other Kenyan communities that have achieved success in combating environmental degradation, such as tree planting and wise resource management.

Their journey demonstrates that athletes can inspire positive change through dedication, innovation and breaking traditional boundaries. Despite potential opposition, they remain committed to the long-term impact of their actions. They recognize that perseverance is crucial, not only in sports but also in the fight for a better future. They seek support and collaboration from their community to achieve their goals.

Despite being a relatively small organization, ORBC's environmental initiatives have made a significant impact. Their journey highlights the transformative power of sports in driving change, breaking societal boundaries and leaving a lasting legacy that transcends competitive play.
